Orhan Pamuk wins Nobel literature prize. He is "who in the quest for the melancholic soul of his native city has discovered new symbols for the clash and interlacing of cultures" says the official Nobel Foundation site.
A search in this blog reveals that I mentioned Orhan Pamuk in 52 entries. Once, I felt to defend his literary aspects (Erkan needs to write a few words on Orhan Pamuk) and I am glad that despite all the political preferences behind this choice, his literary talents are rewarded....
For the round up of Nobel gossips before the result was announced:
...........since the first prize in 1901, the 18-member Swedish Academy has never been shy about awarding writers whose body of work was little-known or outright obscure to most readers..........

Orhan Pamuk's "Snow" has been sitting on my coffee table for quite a while. Always wanted to read it, but I never got around to do so. I really should read it now.
Any other favorite books?
Posted by: Joerg at October 12, 2006 03:31 PMYes, I really think he hesitated the prize (although Kapuciskinky is better for my opinion). Anyway, I'm referring only to the literally side of his work. For me "Snow" is a great search of existencial sense of life, the political aspects of the book, are for me, part of the background that influence in the main character (KA) but not, as usually quoted, the main argument of the book. Is more an existencial book than a political thriller. What do you think about that?
Posted by: Andres at October 13, 2006 12:58 AMIt's not very good for our own country's future. If he has underestimated Turkey, then the next generations will have the same point of view because they will be living in a different time period and they surely won't know about Turkey objectively.
Posted by: Pinar Kucuk at October 13, 2006 11:06 AMı I really think this is a great achievement and source of proud for all Turks. We may not agree all political ideas of Orhan Pamuk but we should be proud of him today as he is the first Turk Nobel winner. In this blog, the reflection of this news is well done and the pictures are good as well.

Posted by: elif ozgen at October 13, 2006 11:09 AMin my opinion, orhan pamuk does not deserve to get the prize. ı think that his books are not important for the nobel jury. because he is ordinary writer. but his thoughts about t? is really dangerous and the jury gave him the prize.. orhan pamuk advocate the armenian rights nat fairly so he won the nobel competititon..
fully bullshit.
Posted by: rahman at October 13, 2006 11:13 AMI cannot agree with a word of my namesake's uninformed and prejudiced opions; I heartily congratulate Orhan Pamuk for his prominent literary achievements that lead to the presentation of this award.
